It works together with German and foreign educational and cultural organizations.
It offers courses for Germans and foreigners.
It runs courses in English language, literature, theater, and music.
It promotes the education and training of gifted young people and continuing education for adults.
It cultivates Theodor Fontane's literary legacy and supports young authors, musicians, and those working in the visual arts.

How long has the Summer School been in existence?

The Summer School for English Language, Literature, Theater, and Music was founded informally and spontaneously in 1990-91 by a small circle of friends working together with the community and the church community of Wust. Its purpose was to promote the education and continuing education of young people in various fields through contact with British and American teachers and to provide cultural rejuvenation for this rural area.

When and where does the Summer School take place?

The Summer School with its four categories of language instruction, literature, theater, and music is held in two two-week sessions during the school vacation of Saxony-Anhalt.

The courses of the Summer School are held in the building of the elementary school, a former manor house from the eighteenth century, which is made available without charge.

Together with the Romanesque brick church and the large park, it forms a harmonious and nearly complete historic ensemble. The location was described by Theodor Fontane, who had visited it in 1867.

Summer School events take place in the church, the park, a barracks theater, a gymnasium “tone hall,” and a granary used for exhibits.

Who is eligible to come?

Pupils as young as ten and adults of every age attend the Summer School. Families with young children are welcome. Previous experience with English as a foreign language is not mandatory.

Where do the participants live?

The participants and docents of the Summer School live either with families in the village or in their own tents on the beautiful and beloved athletic field, which is suitable for soccer games and other sports events. Parties take place at the tent area, as well as grilling evenings at the campfire and discos, all of which promote the sense of community and coherence among the campers.

What would an average day be like for a participant?

The participants have breakfast in the morning with their host families. The campers take care of themselves or have breakfast in the dining room of the school.

Monday through Friday at 8:45, there is a short meeting of all docents and participants at the school. Participants are given important information and tips about events of the day.

For three hours beginning at 9:00, regular classes in English as a foreign language are held. Participants are divided on the first day of each session into groups according to both previous knowledge and age: Club Classes (10 years-old and above with limited previous knowledge), Intermediate Groups (participants with previous knowledge, including adults), and Advanced Groups (participants with advanced knowledge of English).

The noon meal is available in the dining room of the school from Monday to Friday at approximately 12:00.

In the afternoon, various workshops and cultural activities are offered by the docents (such as American or British history, choir, theater or concert rehearsals, dance, Business English, art, and so forth). Participants can choose among these according to their own interests.

Lectures, readings, seminars, concerts, and other public events are on the program in the evenings.

Are there special highlights?

Former participants describe the public, bilingual theater production at the end of the second session as the climax of the Summer School. For those who take part in the performance, attendance for all four weeks is required.
